816 Playoff Edition Wildcard Weekend

816 Playoff Edition Wildcard Weekend

Normally I would be discussing my top 3 plays at each position. However this is a special weekend.  The NFL playoffs are beginning.  Wildcard weekend is upon us and the 816 area code is humming with anticipation.  This weekend features 8 teams looking to move forward in the playoffs.  On Saturday January the 6th, the Titans will be facing the Chiefs and also the Falcons face the Rams.  Sunday the 7th, features match ups of the Bills versus Jaguars and Panthers against the Saints.  Being an 816 podcast I will be focusing on the Titans, Chiefs Game.  I want to take a look at each position and see who has the advantage in this game.  For example: Delanie Walker vs. Travis Kelce. Which team has the advantage at the tight end position?    Lets get started with the Quarterback position.

Marcus Mariota vs Alex Smith

Marcus Mariota has really struggled this season.  He is completing 62% of his passes for 3232 passing yards.  He has thrown 13 touchdowns against 15 interceptions.  He also added 312 rushing yards on 60 attempts with an additional 5 touchdowns.  He has thrown for under 256 yards in 11 of 16 games this season.  This offense has sputtered to move the ball through the air they average under 200 yards per game passing the ball.  Yet Some how the Titans managed to make the playoffs.

Alex Smith has been playing brilliantly this season. He has been completing 67.5% of passes for 4042 passing yards.  He has thrown 26 passing touchdown with just 5 interceptions.   Alex also added 355 rushing yards with an extra touchdown.  He is having a career year in passing yards, and touchdowns.  With just 5 interception on the season, he has been really limiting the mistakes.  This efficiency with the ball has led the Chiefs to a 5-1 record in the division.

ADVANTAGE:  Alex Smith Chiefs

Derrick Henry vs Kareem Hunt

Derrick Henry is the Titans leading rusher with 744 yards.  He also contributed 5 rushing touchdowns with 11 receptions and another touchdown.  He is a large running back.  He measures in at 6’3 247 lbs. His counter part in this game Kareem Hunt measures in at 5’10 216 lbs.   Being this big you might think Henry does not have breakaway speed but he has long touchdown runs of 72, 75 and a reception of 66 yards.  Demarco Murray the other Titans running back has been injured and will not play in this game thus leaving Henry to gather all the carries in this game.

Kareem Hunt the leagues leading rusher has averaged almost 5 yards per carry.  Kareem has 1327 rushing yards with 8 touchdowns and added another 53 receptions for 455 yards and 3 more touchdowns.  He has been a true workhorse back since week 1.  In the 6 games that Kareem has 21 or more carries the Chiefs have won all 6 of those games!  It is imperative that Kareem gets the rock.  In my opinion this is a tougher match up to call.  But being an 816 podcast…..

ADVANTAGE:  Kareem Hunt Chiefs

Titans Wide Receivers vs Chiefs Wide Receivers

Titans Wide receivers start with Rishard Matthews, a solid but unspectacular #1 wr.  Then Eric Decker steps into the #2 role, he is a solid possession receiver.  Corey Davis is a promising rookie that has shown flashes of becoming a legit #1 wide receiver.  They are all capable of having a blow up game.

The Chiefs wide receiver corps is led by Tyreek Hill.  He has true game breaking ability.  Tyreek Hill possesses scary fast speed.  He can break a long touchdown at any point in the game.  Next in line is Albert Wilson a steady, move the chain type player.  Nothing flashy just gets the job done. The other wide receivers are nothing to get excited about. The Titans have a deeper wide receiver corps, but the Chiefs have a true game breaker in Tyreek Hill.  So I give just a slight edge to the Chiefs.

ADVANTAGE:  Tyreek Hill Chiefs

Delanie Walker vs Travis Kelce

Delanie Walker is a local kid from Central Missouri State.  It hard not to root for a Mule.  Any way Delanie has been the defacto #1 receiver for this team.  He has 20 more receptions than the #2 guy.  He also has the most receiving yards on the team. For the record Delanie has 74 receptions for 807 yards and 3 touchdowns.  As far as tight ends go he is third in receptions and fourth in yardage.  He has been a tight end you can count on this season.

Travis Kelce is the league leader in receptions for a tight end.  He has collected 83 balls for 1038 yards and 8 touchdowns.  Only Rob Gronkowski averages more yards per game than Kelce.  This guy is a huge part of the Chiefs offense.  Andy Reid has a penchant for designing plays for his play makers.  With Kelce standing at 6’5 and running routes like a wide receiver it’s not hard to see how he collected 83 balls on the season.  I give this one to the Chiefs as well, Kelce is a difference maker at the position while Walker is a solid contributor.

ADVANTAGE:  Travis Kelce  Chiefs

Titans Defense vs Chiefs Defense

Titans have been a sold defense all year-long.  Currently they rank as the #13 overall defense.  They have been stout against the run only allowing 88 rushing yards per game.  They do allow almost 240 passing yards per game.  They also give up an average of 22.3 points per game.  Titans have accumulated 43 sacks on the season good for the 5th most in the league.  They also have forced 23 fumbles good for 5th overall.  This is a much better defense than people perceive.  Titans get after the quarterback and force a lot of turnovers.  This has caused a lot of problems for opposing teams offenses.

Chiefs defense has been struggling all year-long.  They currently rank # 28 overall.  They give up an average of 118 rushing yards to go along with 247 passing yards.  They have allowed the 5th most yards per game on the season.  Chiefs have only generated 31 sacks, 19 forced fumbles, and 16 interceptions for the season.  Besides Marcus Peters this defense lacks play makers!  At some point in the playoffs this lack of defensive play makers is going to become apparent.  In this match up I give the edge to the Titans.

Well there you have it a little bit of game breakdown for Titans vs Chiefs.  The Chiefs are looking for their first home playoff win since January 8th 1994.  I gave the Chiefs the edge in all the offensive categories and I do believe the Chiefs will win the game and will  advance through Wildcard Weekend.  Good luck to everyone.  I hope you all enjoyed this article/blog.  I would love to hear your thoughts about this game or any thing else related to the 816 area code.  Feel free to leave message below or contact me through facebook or twitter.  Thank you for your time.
