Patrick Mahomes Era has Begun!!!

Alex Smith has been traded to the Washington Redskins.  The Redskins gave up Kendall Fuller and an additional 3rd round draft pick to acquire Alex Smith’s services. The Redskins immediately sign Smith to a 4 year contract extension that is worth at least 70 million guaranteed money.

In this deal the Chiefs save 17 million dollars, get a draft pick and acquired a young and talented corner back.  This trade was everything that the Chiefs were looking for.  Smith needed to be moved because of his salary.  Chiefs needed to recoup some draft capital that was spent on drafting Mahomes.  Finally the Chiefs needed to address an aging defense.  Chiefs checked all of those boxes in one trade.  Well Done.

The Chiefs offense now belongs to Patrick Mahomes.  A young gunslinger that is not afraid to throw the ball downfield.  The offense has plenty of play-makers including Tyreek Hill, Kareem Hunt and Travis Kelce.  I expect some growing pains from Mahomes and company but the future looks bright for this offense.

Kendall Fuller is one of 4 brothers to play in the NFL.  He is listed at 6′ 196 lbs.  He has started 12 games in the last 2 years for the Washington Redskins.  This past year he was rated the #6 corner per Pro Football Focus.  He is a quality young corner that should pair well with Marcus Peters.  In my opinion, the Chiefs still need to focus on improving the defense.  This is one step in the right direction.

Overall I believe the Chiefs made out well in this deal.  I had previously stated that Alex Smith value was around a 3rd round pick.  To get a 3 rd pick plus a player of Fuller’s caliber is a huge win for the Chiefs front office.
